This 2-part workshop runs across two Saturdays and is designed as a crash course into painting.

Part One: Saturday 12th
In part one we’ll run through concepts of value and creating depth and form. We’ll talk about the fall of light, shadows, and reflected light, and put it all together in a monochromatic underpainting to be finished the following week. Understanding the importance of value is really the magic key to any great painting

Path Two: Saturday 19th March
In part two we’ll talk about colour! We’ll run through some basic colour theory that will last you a lifetime, and apply that to last weeks underpainting. You'll learn how to mix any colour from a limited palette and start to differentiate between colour and value.

 Requirements:

  • Paints in the following colours (oil is the preference, although acrylic, gouache or watercolour will be okay)

    • Cadmium Yellow
      Ultramarine Blue
      Vermillion Red
      White
      Burnt Umber
      Ochre

  • Medium - either a solvent or oil of your choice

  • Brushes - a mix of bristles and sizes

  • 1 x canvas or canvas paper (approx 30cm in size)

  • Palette

  • Rags (and plenty of them)

  • Brush Cleaner

    • If you’re new to painting and are unsure what materials to buy, please feel free to contact me for affordable recommendations. There is a great art store in Southport called Musgrave Art that I always recommend for art supplies.

Light snacks, tea, and coffee are provided during the break, but feel free to bring your own :)
